History of the Church in Florida
Possibly the first missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Florida was Phineas Young, who served a two-month mission in 1845. Florida's first official Church congregation was created in Jefferson County in 1897. By 1904 there were 1,230 Church members in Florida.
Church growth in Florida was slow until Latter-day Saints from the West moved to Florida, drawn by a strong commerce and the aerospace industry.
Today, church members in Florida come from all walks of life. Church members here share a rich heritage of community and public service. They are active in youth sports leagues, community events, the Boy Scouts and much more. They are teachers, dentists, construction workers, mothers, fathers and your neighbors.
